Take Back Control of Your Health

Having the right health coach in your back pocket can help you go beyond general nutrition advice and create a more personalized approach to your health.

If you want to use nutrition to address a specific health concern, I can help you navigate issues such as metabolic imbalances, autoimmune conditions, food sensitivities, digestive concerns, chronic conditions, nutrient deficiencies, gut-brain connection/microbiome health, and inflammation.

Having support through this process can be invaluable.  The information surrounding certain approaches to eating can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to move away from traditional dietary practices, navigate new restrictions, and make significant lifestyle changes.  You don't have to figure it all out alone.

As your health coach, I can help assess whether a functional therapeutic eating approach may be appropriate for your goals, guide you through symptom tracking and dietary adjustments, and provide ongoing suppport to help you stay consistant with nutrition, lifestyle, and movement recommendations.

We can monitor your progress, identify what is - and isn't- working, and make adjustments along the way.

I'm also well qualified to work alongside your registered dietician or healthcare provider if you have been prescribed a specific diet but are struggling to implement it on your own.  My role is to help you turn recommendations into practical, sustainable habits that fit into your everyday life.

You don't have to navigate your health journey alone.  I can help you understand the plan, implement it, and stay supported along the way.

What is a Functional Therapeutic Diet?

Functional therapeutic diets are specialized eating plans designed to address specific health conditions by using whole foods, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle interventions to support healing and prevent disease. They are a core part of functional medicine and therapeutic nutrition, focusing on finding the causes of problem, rather than just treating symptoms. They put you in control of monitoring changes in your body and making adjustments that you can manage.

I generally focus on the following dietary approaches, each designed to address different nutritional, metabolic, digestive, or inflammatory concerns.

These include:

  • Paleo Diet — Emphasizes minimally processed, whole foods and can be used to support metabolic and digestive health.

  • Whole-Food Ketogenic Diet — Focuses on healthy fats, adequate protein, and very low carbohydrate intake, with potential applications for metabolic and neurological health.

  • Basic Elimination Diet — Temporarily removes common food allergens and potential irritants to help identify dietary triggers and support symptom management.

  • Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) — Limits certain carbohydrates with the goal of reducing digestive symptoms and altering the environment of the gut microbiome.

  • Low-FODMAP Diet — Reduces specific fermentable carbohydrates and is commonly used to help manage digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea.

  • Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) — An elimination-style approach that temporarily removes a range of foods that may contribute to symptoms, followed by a structured reintroduction process.

  • Plant-Compound Elimination Approach — A targeted elimination strategy that explores individual tolerance to certain plant compounds and naturally occurring substances when food sensitivities are suspected.

The goal isn’t to follow restrictive diets indefinitely.

The right approach depends on the individual, their symptoms, goals, nutritional needs, and medical history. Therapeutic diets should be thoughtfully implemented, monitored, and adjusted as appropriate, often in collaboration with a qualified healthcare professional.

Are functional and therapeutic diets just fad diets that come and go?

Not necessarily. While some eating approaches have gained “fad diet” status through social media and popular culture, many are grounded in scientific research and can be valuable when used appropriately, for the right person, and for the appropriate length of time.

That doesn’t mean they have magical benefits for weight loss—or that they are necessary for everyone. Their potential value comes from how specific dietary changes may influence certain health conditions, symptoms, or individual responses to food. This might involve adjusting macronutrient intake or temporarily limiting particular ingredients, food components, or naturally occurring compounds.

The reality is that most people don’t need a therapeutic diet. However, some individuals may benefit from a more targeted approach when general nutrition recommendations aren’t enough to address their specific concerns.

My goal is to provide an evidence-informed avenue for people who are looking for something beyond general nutrition advice—while helping determine whether a functional therapeutic approach is actually appropriate for them.

It’s not about finding the perfect diet. It’s about finding the right approach for the right person, for the right reason, and for the right amount of time.
