Take a Walk!

Updated: Apr 15, 2024

We all hear it but are we actually doing it? I have recently picked up walking again after a prolonged hiatus that I can only blame on my kids no longer being young enough to be pushed in strollers to facilitate naptime. My daughter is now 12 and my son is 7, so I think it's safe to say that the break is now officially over!

Although I make a conscious effort to get plenty of daily movement, I began to notice that there was more sedentary time creeping into my daily life than I would like to allow. I have found that adding a daily walking routine into my schedule has solved this problem and has also provided many benefits that I didn't realize I was missing out on.

A few examples:

  • I know that I am reducing my risk of chronic disease every time I take those steps.

  • I know that I am strengthening my bones and preserving bone density for a good quality of life as I age.

  • I am getting a lot more Vitamin D by taking my daily walks, and during flu season, we all could use a little extra!

  • My kids love walking to the park and the physical activity in my routine passes down to them to create positive habits.

  • A daily walk makes me feel happy and everybody appreciates being around someone in a good mood.

  • My dogs are much happier with the new walking routine, which provides a positive feeling for me as well.

If anyone is looking for something easy and simple to begin with big and lasting benefits, today may be the day to get your shoes on and walk to the front door. Small steps lead to bigger steps!
